Difference between Eri silk and wool knitting yarn

Despite bearing similar characteristics as with most protein fibres, silk and wool do have their fair share of differences.

For instance, Eri silk is known to possess isothermal properties. Which means that it is an all-weather fibre, ideal both in summer and winter. Wool on the other hand, is known to be an excellent insulator of heat. It is generally used in winter as it is known to retain warmth very effectively.

Apart from this, here are a couple more differences that you need to know:

 Wool Fiber  Eri Silk Fiber
Wool is a protein fiber obtained from furry animals such as sheep.  Eri silk is a natural protein fiber. The protein fiber of silk is made primarily out of fibroin and is created by Samia Cynthia Ricini moth or Philosomia Ricini moth.
To get ready for spinning yarn, the wool fibers go through a scouring process to remove impurities such as grease, dirt and other debris. Cocoons are boiled in water to remove a gummy substance, after the moths emerge.
Wool is a short fiber that need to be handspun or machine spun into a continuous yarn for use in knitting or weaving. The Eri cocoons are open mouthed making it the only staple silk fiber that need to be spun like wool and cotton for use in knitting and weaving.
Wool can feel scratchy when worn next to skin. Eri silk is a no-itch fiber and feel smooth & soft when worn.
Wool fiber doesn’t wrinkle easily and springs back to shape when stretched. When the fiber or fabric is rubbed, it produces static electricity.

Eri silk has low shrinkage and excellent drapability. It is smooth and comfortable to wear, without static electricity and pilling.

Wool, although hydrophilic, tends to pill because the surface of the wool fibers is scaly and the scales stick to each other and to the fabric. Eri silk is hydrophilic fiber meaning it can absorb a lot of water making Eri silk fabric less prone to pilling.

To ensure best results, a few tips while buying hand-dyed, hand-spun knitting yarn:

  • Estimate how much you will need for your project and buy at one go. Else the color may vary when you order more, if you fall short, as hand-dyed result in subtle variations. in fact, different shades give it an extra beauty – especially when you know that the colors are nature given, without any harmful chemicals.
  • It will be a good idea to use all the skeins together – say you have two skeins – then knit a few rows with one and the next few with the other. This will give a uniform mix of color.
